The Williamsburg Area

The historic city of Williamsburg, VA is located on the Virginia Peninsula in southeast Virginia. In 1632, it was established as a fort in what was then called the Middle Plantation; chosen as an optimal defense location due to its location on high ground. It was designated the capital of the Virginia Colony (the very first English colony) for 81 years starting in 1699. The events leading to the American Revolution were centered around this colony due to its political significance.

In Williamsburg originated the College of William & Mary, from which 3 former U.S. presidents graduated, and it is one of the oldest colleges in the world; proceeded only by Harvard. It was established in 1693 and is the only southern college of all 9 colonial colleges. Students, staff, and faculty of the college of William & Mary make up a significant part of the population.

Williamsburg is a tourist city largely because of its early American roots. Williamsburg is associated with Jamestown and Yorktown to form what is known as the Historic Triangle – a historical region that attracts over 4 million tourists each year and is a major boost to the Williamsburg economy.
